The design of Armory Bay set for Atlas, a Sci-Fi action movie for Netflix, required a multidisciplinary approach to bring the spaceship's interior to life. We combined traditional carpentry, sculpting, metal fabrication, mold casting, and painting to create an environment that felt both functional and authentic. By building as much of the set as possible on the soundstage, we were able to ground the scenery, providing VFX teams with accurate references for seamless set extensions.
This set played a flexible role throughout the story, transitioning from quiet dialogue scenes to bustling action as characters prepared for a mission, and culminating in a high-intensity evacuation sequence as the ship comes under attack. The versatility of the set was key to supporting the narrative's range of emotional and action-driven moments.
In my role as Art Director, I coordinated the work of various artists and craftspeople, ensuring that each discipline came together smoothly to support the vision. From collaborating with sculptors and metal fabricators to communicating with painters and VFX teams, my focus was on ensuring the practical elements aligned with the creative direction.
A talented team of artists contributed to this set, including Fausto De Martini, who provided the original concept and mechanics, Haisu Wang, who designed the detailed model of the 20-foot tall maintenance wheels with mechanical arms, Darryl Agawin, who handled fabrication and construction documentation, and Joshua Sankar, who led the graphic design. Together, we created a cohesive and immersive environment that supported the film's story.
